ESL summer 12

Thirty-five students of 11 nationalities are converging on Sacred Heart School of Theology for its summer English-as-a-Second-Language Program.

The group is the largest summer class in recent years. The students are mostly priests, brothers and nuns from around the world. Lay church workers often attend as well.

The current seminarians, many of whom are pictured above with their instructors, are from: Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala, Indonesia, Ivory Coast, Mexico, Nicaragua, Poland, Spain, Venezuela, and Vietnam.

The seminary conducts two consecutive summer sessions, one running from July 2 through  Auct. 17 and one from Aug. 27 to Oct. 12. With a few exceptions, the students stay for both, and some stay for a year or more. Additional ESL session are run throughout the school year.

The program has earned a reputation among Catholic religious congregations around the world. Six graduates of the SHST program have been named bishops. It provides individualized instruction in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, as well as a wide range of off-campus activities to acquaint students with customs and activities in English-speaking cultures.
