Timothy Cardinal Dolan, the former Archbishop of Milwaukee, has been honored with Sacred Heart School of Theology’s Archbishop Cousins award.
Cardinal Dolan has been instrumental in positioning Sacred Heart School of Theology for the success it currently enjoys as one of the leading Catholic seminaries in the United Sates.
His brother, Robert Dolan, accepted the award on the Cardinal’s behalf at the seminary's annual Awards Dinner on Oct. 24, as Cardinal Dolan had a previously scheduled trip to Rome at the time of the presentation.
The Cousins Award honors an organization or individual who has demonstrated distinguished effort, involvement and promotion of vocations among men over the age of 30 to the Roman Catholic priesthood. The award was established by Sacred Heart to commemorate Milwaukee Archbishop Cousins’ 60th anniversary of priesthood and to recognize his leadership role in promoting vocations. This year’s was the 25th Archbishop Cousins Award presented.
While he was Archbishop of Milwaukee, Cardinal Dolan was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of Sacred Heart School of Theology in fall 2002 and served until December 2008. During that time, he conducted a three year process of strategic planning for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, culminating in his announcement on April 16, 2006 that Saint Francis de Sales Seminary would enter into a collaborative agreement with Sacred Heart School of Theology, wherein Saint Francis de Sales Seminary would remain open and be responsible for the human, spiritual and pastoral pillars of the formation of men for the priesthood, and Sacred Heart School of Theology would be responsible for the intellectual pillar of formation.
Throughout his tenure in Milwaukee, Cardinal Dolan was an earnest and energetic supporter of Sacred Heart. He regularly made Pastoral Visits to Sacred Heart, conducted a Faculty Development Session, led a seminary formation day on the work of Catholic Relief Services, assisted the seminary in the implementation of the 5th edition of the Program of Priestly Formation, and supported Sacred Heart School of Theology in numerous other ways.
Sacred Heart made a donation to Catholic Relief Services, a favorite charity of Cardinal Dolan’s, in his name, to commemorate the honor.
Cardinal Dolan is the Archbishop of New York and is the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
