Pre-Theology

Sacred Heart School of Theology follows all the norms for admission of candidates as
stated in the Program of Priestly Formation, 5th edition (PPF-5).
Many candidates for priesthood begin their studies at Sacred Heart
without the necessary undergraduate background and/or the prerequisite philosophical
and introductory theological background. Some also need additional time for spiritual
and human development. With this in mind, Sacred Heart offers a Pre-Theology Program of
one to two years. The length of the program depends on the candidate's previous background
and the judgement of the sponsoring diocese or religious community, many of which
have their own formal programs for accepting and preparing candidtes.

Pre-Theology Spiritual and Human Formation
Spiritual and human formation is an integral part of the Pre-Theology Program. All pre-theology students
live at Sacred Heart and participate in all required spiritual formation activities.
The daily celebration of the Eucharist together with the Liturgy of the Hours is at the
heart of community life.Through private and communal prayer, daily Eurcharist, Liturgy of the Hours,
the sacrament of Reconciliation, retreats, days of recollection, and rector's conferences,
seminarians have every opportunity to strengthen their relationship with God and their
call to priesthood. Seminarians have an individual spiritual director and a spiritual advisor
who meet regularly with them to assist them in the discernment and integration process.
In addition, the program introduces the student to the full Catholic heritage of spiritual
practice and to the discipline necessary for authentic spiritual development.

Pre-Theology Undergraduate Studies Options
For those 30 years or older, Sacred Heart requires a minimum of 60 undergraduate credits
to enter the theology program. Some candidates do not have the necessary undergraduate credits
and the necessary philosophical and introductory theological background to be admitted to the
Master of Divinity or Certificate in Priestly Formation Program. They can meet the admission
requirements by enrolling in either the Bachelor of Arts/Master of Divinity track or the
non-degree/certificate track. With each choice, the seminarians reside at Sacred Heart and
fully participate in the seminary's spiritual and human formation program while
they attend classes at Cardinal Stritch University, a Catholic university in Milwaukee.
Bachelor of Arts/Master of Divinity
Candidates who do not possess a bachelor's degree may earn
a Bachelor of Arts from Cardinal Stritch University, Milwaukee, while working
for the Master of Divinity at Sacred Heart.
The details of the program will be tailored to meet the needs of each student.
Past experience has shown that a student can earn both the Bachelor of Arts and Master
of Divinity degrees in five and a half to six years, depending on
previous academic background.
Non-degree/Certificate
Candidates who do not possess the necessary undergraduate credits but who do not
want to pursue an undergraduate degree can be admitted to the Certificate in Priestly
Formation Program at Sacred Heart once they have completed at least 60 undergraduate
credits from accredited institutions. These undergraduate credits can be completed by
taking courses at Cardinal Stritch University. At the same time, the student can
complete all or some of the necessary philosophical and introductory theological background
as required in the Introductory Studies option. This program can be completed in two
to four semesters depending on the previous academic background of the candidate.
Pre-Theology Introductory Studies Option
This option is for candidates who either have an undergraduate degree
or are over 30 years old and have at least 60
undergraduate credits from an accredited institution but have little or no prerequisite philosophical or introductory theological background mandated by the Program of Priestly Formation. Depending
on one's academic history, this option can be completed
in one to two years.
