History
The Leo Dehon Library was officially founded in 1932. Efforts were immediately begun to collect and build a first-class seminary library. It has grown from the original 20 shelves to well over 90,000 volumes.
While retaining major emphasis on theological and scriptural materials, the library maintains a well-balanced general book collection, with strengths in the areas of philosophy, Church history, social justice, canon law and psychology. Additionally, the library subscribes to over 450 periodicals and relevant research aids. The majority of these are listed in the Catholic Periodical and Literature Index, The Religion Indexes, and in theological and scriptural abstracts. It also maintains a substantial collection of audiovisual materials in various formats.
Internet access is available at several public access computers in the library itself. One computer is equipped with a special scanning software and Braille embosser for the visually impaired. There are outlets for laptop connections throughout the building.
Leo Dehon Library is a full member of the Southeastern Wisconsin Information Technology Exchange (SWITCH) consortium which operates our online catalog and provides access to the library collections of seven other private colleges, universities and graduate schools in the Milwaukee area. Students can request SWITCH materials online and have them delivered directly to Sacred Heart. The library is also affiliated with the Library Council of Southeastern Wisconsin, providing inter-library loan from other area libraries.
The library staff offers introductory group sessions on library and computer basics, Internet use, e-mail, and word processing, as well as individualized research assistance. Research tutorials are available through the online catalog as well as online databases.
Leo Dehon Library is accessible to faculty and students on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week. Staff members are available for assistance from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. weekdays during the academic year.
Besides supporting the priestly formation programs at Sacred Heart, the library serves the personal, pastoral and academic needs of registered patrons from the wider community.
