Sacred Heart School of Theology is a seminary owned and operated as an apostolate of the U.S. Province of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which works with diocesan priests, men and women religious and laity in the seminary's mission. Sacred Heart School of Theology Seminary's primary purpose is the preparation of men of mature years and experience for Roman Catholic priesthood, both diocesan and religious, in accordance with the National Conference of Catholic Bishops' Program of Priestly Formation, and other related Church documents. Sacred Heart School of Theology also provides academic theological education for those in or preparing for other ministries in the Church and programs for those seeking personal faith enrichment. Sacred Heart School of Theology strives to be a community responsive to the presence of the Holy Spirit, to individual talents and needs, and to challenges facing the Church and society, especially issues of justice and peace.

Seminarians in the Master of Divinity Program are sponsored by dioceses and religious communities throughout the United States, Canada and other foreign countries. The program has three components: spiritual and human formation, intellectual formation, and pastoral formation. It is designed to respect the differences in each person’s life and experience. An undergraduate degree is required for the Master of Divinity degree, although candidates with a minimum of 60 undergraduate credits can be admitted to the Certificate in Priestly Formation Program. Both the degree and certificate programs normally require four years of theological studies.

The program has four components: human formation, spiritual formation, intellectual formation, and pastoral formation. It is designed to respect the differences in each person’s life and experience. An undergraduate degree is required for the Master of Divinity degree, although candidates with a minimum of 60 undergraduate credits can be admitted to the Certificate in Priestly Formation Program. Both the degree and certificate programs normally require four years of theological studies.

An individualized program of studies and spiritual and human formation can be designed for those candidates who enter the Priestly Formation Program as permanent deacons or who have been in religious life.

Admissions

Admission to the Master of Divinity Program requires sponsorship by a diocese or religious community. Such sponsorship means acceptance of the student as a potential candidate for ordination to the priesthood in the sponsoring diocese or community.

Graduation

Sacred Heart awards a Master of Divinity degree upon completion of specified spiritual and human formation requirements, 124 credit hours and a cumulative QPA of 2.5 in Sacred Heart courses. Details are in the catalog.

Spiritual and Human Formation

Spiritual and human formation concentrates on a candidate’s personal relationship with God and the expression of that relationship with others. Seminarians meet regularly with their spiritual director and spiritual advisor. Their prayer life is both private and communal with daily Eucharist at the center of it. The sacrament of Reconciliation, days of recollection, retreats, prayer in Spanish, and rector’s conferences are all part of the spiritual and human formation program.Spiritual and human formation concentrate on a candidate’s personal relationship with God and the expression of that relationship with others. Intellectual Formation

Theological studies immerse seminarians in the richness of the Catholic tradition and the wide range of experiences and insights of the believing community today. Their personal understanding of the Christian message is challenged and deepened, and they are guided to frame and communicate an authentic Christian message which will respond genuinely to the needs of the modern world.Class size is limited to permit personal exchange. An extensive theological library is available on campus.

Pastoral Formation

Sacred Heart’s pastoral formation (field education) program seeks to form future priests in the model of Christ the Good Shepherd. Complimenting the formation of a genuinely pastoral heart, the program cultivates the development of an array of pastoral skills needed to serve as good shepherds of God's people. Pastoral formation is accomplished through instruction, immersion in pastoral settings and theological reflection on pastoral experiences.
